- 04/07/09 - LOS ANGELES – April 1, 2009 – After winning the U.S. Olympic Trials, John Shuster and his U.S. teammates from Duluth Curling Club hope to find success in Canada during the Ford World Men’s Curling Championships. - 03/02/09 - Congratulations to SPCC member John Benton who will curl for USA in the 2010 Olympics. Benton plays lead for the John Shuster rink that defeated the Tyler George team 10-9 on Saturday to win the 2009 US curling championship. Team Shuster also advances to the 2009 World Curling Championships as Team USA.
- 02/28/09 - Team McCormick defeats Team Lank to earn a spot at the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics – as well as a berth in the upcoming World Curling Championship. Skip Debbie McCormick, third and Eden Prairie resident and St. Paul Curling Club memberAllison Pottinger, second Nicole Joraanstad, and lead Natalie Nicholson - held Patti Lank to 1 in the nine end, to come home with the hammer to score an additional two in the tenth end. Lank missed an important center guard with her last stone in the tenth end to allow McCormick a somewhat “routine” double take-out with her final stone in her 8-5 victory.

- 02/22/09 - The 2009 U.S. Curling Nationals double as the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team Trials and take place Feb. 21-28 in Broomfield, Colo. Ten teams per gender qualified for trials, and the men's and women's winner will represent the United States at the 2009 World Championships and 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

- 01/15/09 - Registration is now open for the Mahler/Kuesel Event to be held for 2 days on February 7th & 8th. The St. Paul CC is bringing back what were two of its popular events from years back. The format will consist of 2 separate Bonspiels running at the same time. Each will be limited to 16 teams, the “MAHLER EVENT” is for Leads and Seconds only and the “KUESEL EVENT” is for Thirds and Skips only. Registrations begin January 13th, 2009. - 08/09/08 - It is with heavy heart that I need to announce the passing of Louise Dolliver. This morning Louise lost her long battle with cancer. She leaves behind husband Frank, children Tracy, Callie, Lee and Brett. Avid curler and jokester Louise always knew how to liven up a room. For those of you that did not know Louise please visit the Caring Bridges Website. Last count she only had 12,867 visitors! I propose we lift a glass and toast her, "You may have left the building but you have not left our hearts". Funeral notice and details to follow. The curling community has lost a true friend.

- 03/11/08 - Congratulations to SPCC member Matt Perushek for bringing home the Gold! Matt is a member of the 2008 World Junior Men’s
Curling Champion Chris Plys rink. After finishing round robin play as the number 3 seed, the U.S. team went on to beat Norway, Canada, and finally Sweden in the championship round. This is only the third junior men’s Gold for the U.S. and the first since 1984. Congratulations on your momentous achievement Matt!

- 03/04/08 - Registration is now open for the SPRING LEAGUE. Registration will ONLY be accepted on-line. Payment of $100 is due PRIOR to the first day of curling, payable at the office.
- 03/11/08 - John Schwab - "Schwabby" - passed away after a long illness on Friday, March 7th at the age of 47. Schwabby was a long time curler, beginning back in the late 70s at the Arden Hills Curling Club and moving to St. Paul in 1981 after Arden Hills closed. Schwabby curled at SPCC until the mid 90s. During his curling career he was a winner of several events including the Winter Carnival Bonspiel, repeat league and club champion and an 8 ender. Schwabby was also a regular of the US/Canada Goodwill Bonspiel and had numerous curling friends on both sides of the border. There will be a full announcement in the Pioneer Press on Wednesday. Visitation and service will be Friday morning. Schwabby was a great spirit and loved the game. He will be truly missed. RIP Schwabby - Mike O'Neil, President/SPCC

- 03/04/08 - The St. Paul Curling Club would like to congratulate three members who are now 2008 US National Champions and will be heading to the World Curling Championships. Allison Pottinger, curling with Team McCormick - Rich Ruohonen & Pete Annis, curling with Team Brown, recently won the US National Championships and will compete at the World Curling Championships. The women's event runs March 22-30 and will be played in Vernon, BC. The men's competition runs April 5-13 in Grand Forks, ND. For more information on both events, check the websites at:

- 02/27/08 - Absolute deadline for signing up for SPCC year-end playoffs is Thursday, March 6. Please indicate on the draw sheets for your league whether your team is "in" or "out" of the playoffs. Teams that do not follow up by Thursday, March 6 will not be included in the year-end flight or championship playoffs.
- 02/24/08 - Spring League Curling is just around the corner, followed by a Summer Spiel on the weekend of May 31st. The Spring League will start up on Monday, April 21st and continue for 6 weeks. On-line sign-up is expected to be ready in the next few days.

- 1/23/08 - All draws have been posted on-line for the 2008 Winter Carnival Bonspiel to start this Friday morning, 01/25/2008.
- 1/22/08 - Longtime SPCC member Delores Pollnow passed away suddenly this past Sunday. Delores was an active member of the club since the 1960s, curling with the Bonnies, Cairn Lassies and Mixed. She was an honorary lifetime member and past president of the Bonnies. Delores also volunteered her time as a USWCA rep. Her son John and grandson Bob, are both longtime members of St. Paul and still active curlers. While Delores had not curled in several years, she was at the club as recently as December watching John compete in the McCann 40+ Bonspiel. Visitation and service will be on Saturday. An obituary with more details should be in the paper on Wednesday or Thursday. Delores was a great SPCC member who loved the game and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

- 08/02/07 - There is incorrect information in the summer letter regarding the grandfather rule for league registration. The letter states that all 4 members of a team must be registered by the Sept. 15th grandfather deadline, in order to retain the team's grandfather status in a given league. This is incorrect! - 08/02/07 - The membership database has been cleared out in preparations for registrations for the 2007-2008 curling season. Also, the access password to the MEMBERS area of our website has been re-set. On-Line Registration is expected to start August 15th, 2007 for the upcoming season.
- 06/26/07 - Al Payne 60, passed away suddenly on June 13,2007 after a short bout with cancer. Being the manager of the Richfield Ice Arena for many years, Al was well aware of the continued and growing interest in curling. He was a member of the SPCC for only 2 years, but thoroughly enjoyed the sport, and became quite adept at it, becoming a skip. A memorial service was held for Al on June 23,2007 at the Richfield High School where hundreds of relatives, friends, and co-workers paid their respects. He will be missed

- 03/22/07 - The SPCC team of Alex Carlson, Tabitha Peterson, Tara Peterson, and Sophie Brorson would like to once again thank the members for their support in the team's fundraising for the US Women's Nationals in Utica, NY. The team finished 3-3 in the round robin play and then won a tiebreaker to advance into the Playoffs. They lost in the Semifinals to the eventual champion- the Debbie McCormick rink. - 03/09/07 - Rocks for Sale! The club has ordered all new curling stones. We are selling the old stones from sheets one, two, seven and eight which are over eighty years old. We have ordered 128 Common Green Stones from the island of Ailsa Craig in Scotland. These are state of the art stones inserted with Blue Hone granite on both running surfaces. They are scheduled for delivery in August and should be in play next season.

- 02/28/07 - The SPCC will be hosting the 2007 USCA Club National Championships on March 5th through March 10th. This event brings together ten state champions for men and women playing a round robin schedule during the week. There will be three draws each day, with games at 9 AM, 2PM, and 7PM Monday through Thursday, and at 8 AM and Noon on Friday with tie-breakers to follow. The semi-finals will be at 9 AM on Saturday with the finals at 2 PM. We have a need for many volunteers so please check the board near the back entry and sign-up to help if you can. We invite every one to come down and watch, admission is free.
- We'd also invite you to show your support by purchasing event merchandise. We have great looking t-shirts and sweatshirts available, as well as stenciled pint glasses. We will have an opening ceremonies on Monday evening March 5th at 6PM. Please come down and show your support.

- 02/04/07 - Fundraiser for Katie Beck! A beautiful curler, a world champion and gold medallist, a friend and a member of our family at the St Paul Curling Club, this is Katie Beck. Unfortunately for us, after a long battle with cancer, Katie passed away December 30, 2006, at the age of 24. [Click here for details].

- 02/01/07 - The 14th annual Kyle Satrom Memorial Junior Bonspiel will be held February 10-11 at SPCC. Many past participants have gone on to play in national and world curling championships -- 92 "alumni" have collectively played in 292 national championships and 37 have played in world championship events.
- Half of the 2006 USA Olympic curling team had participated in the Kyle Satrom Spiel and 3 of the 5 players on Team USA that won the World University Games last week have also played in the bonspiel. One of the unique features of this bonspiel is that all participants receive door prizes. If you are willing to donate prizes for the event (anything for kids age 10-21, including gift cards), please contact Donn or Linda Satrom or the club managers.

- 01/07/07 - On-Line registrations for bonspiels has now been turned back on. We were dealing with a hack to our registration database which was resulting in a number of false registrations, spam-advertisements, and as a last straw, porn being uploaded to the website. In order to register for any bonspiel, you will be prompted for a login/password. For MEMBERS, this is the same standard login and password used to access the MEMBER database. Non members will need to contact the club to obtain a GUEST login/password.
- 01/02/07 - Former SPCC member Katie Beck lost her battle with cancer on 12/30 at the young age of 24. Katie was a member at St. Paul while attending the U of M a couple years ago. She was also a member of the 2002 World Junior championship team. For more information on Katie's life, click on either of the two links below:

- 11/09/06 - Long time curler and SPCC member Romey Dalnes passed away after a long, debilitating illness on Wednesday, 11/8. Romey was an active curler at St. Paul for nearly 50 years. He was a past board member and very involved with volunteerism at the club for many years. Throughout his curling career Romey competed in numerous bonspiels. His last competition was at the 2003 National Seniors held at our club. Romey's son Jerry is carrying on the Dalnes tradition and has curled at SPCC since the 80's. Romey was a good man and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him on & off the ice. Funeral arrangements are pending; please watch the paper for an announcement.

My advice for everyone is to pay well in advance of arriving at the club for your first game, to avoid the rush. You can do this by mailing a check directly to the club or by credit card over the phone. If you choose the credit card method, please call the club on or after Oct. 1 as this date coincides with the beginning of our fiscal year. The managers have been asked not to accept credit card payments prior to 10/1. It won't be long now. See you on the ice!
