THE STORY:
Mike Rugg was an active member of the St. Paul Curling Club his entire life. In 1958 Mike started the Junior Curling Program. This was a program that was dedicated to the young kids at the club. This program gave them a time and a place that would teach them to curl with kids their own age. In the first years of the program there were around 35 kids who participated. Through Mike’s efforts, that program grew to over 100 kids. In recent years, the age range has grown to encompass kids between the ages of 6 and 21. Mike ran the program for over 30 years and there are many people in the club today who got their start in this program. Today, the program is as strong as ever and continues to foster curling in kids who are throwing their first rock, to competitive, national junior level curlers.
Mike’s dedication to Junior curling is the reason this bonspiel is here today. In honor of Mike, this bonspiel is dedicated to the St. Paul Curling Club’s Junior program. All proceeds from this event are donated to the SPCC Junior Curling program. This event is the major fundraiser for the program and continues to provide opportunities for kids to get out onto the ice, throw rocks, and enjoy the spirit of curling.
